Mega Millions Top Winner Stories
The Mega Millions lottery has made many winners along the years. Whether it surfaces in the media or not, each of them has a story. Some of these stories stand out for the good, some for the worse. It's biggest jackpot ever awarded is also the second largest jackpot in the world ($153 Crore!), after the world-record one offered by the US Powerball. The rivalry of Mega Millions vs Powerball is just legendary!
Stephen Cook's story is probably one of the most exciting ones. Why? Because he defied all lottery winner stats. He did not win the jackpot once, but twice! Back in November 2003, Mr. Cook was happy to find out he won a third of a $7 Crore Mega Millions jackpot. But, as he got to the Atlanta Lottery headquarters, he was surprised to find out his name featured two of the winning tickets. It turns out he forgot he had already bought a ticket and purchased another one, with the same numbers.
Record jackpot
The record jackpot in the Mega Millions is a whopping $153 Crore, which makes it one of the best lotteries to play and win. It came just shy of breaking the world record, which is still held by the US Powerball and its $158 Crore jackpot of January 2016. The mouth-watering $153 Crore was won by a single player from South Carolina on October 23, 2018. It took all the way to March 2019 for the world’s biggest winner to come forward and place a claim on this legendary prize. Everybody was dying to know who the winner was, but in the end, he or she decided to remain anonymous. Luckily, this was a simple process because South Carolina is one of the few states where lottery winners are not obligated to make their identities public.
